BIOTOOL is an innovative research project developed by Tradecorp International and Italian research centre Landlab, supported by Eurostars programme. The project aim is to develop the BIOTOOL platform together with a new and improved range of seaweed-based biostimulants, tested and certified with it. To reach these goals, the BIOTOOL platform was developed as a tool for the study of water use efficiency (WUE) under experimental conditions and for real-time evaluation of plant status in suboptimal conditions of water application. In addition, Tradecorp investigated new active substances (from seaweed compounds and other vegetal sources) that positively influence plant metabolic processes, designed to improve the plant’s performance to stresses and overcome water restriction, allowing a greater WUE, and assuming a lower environmental impact during its application in crops.

The use of the high-throughput methodology developed for the BIOTOOL platform allows researchers and growers to cope with hydric stress and explore a higher WUE by means of stablishing different water regimens during crop cycle, while collecting data of water availability and usage by plants at greenhouse-scale. Biostimulation performance on greenhouse trials was validated in additional field trials in both Northern and Southern hemispheres, obtaining similar tendencies with the prototypes tested. These field trial results obtained with the newly developed biostimulants showed that, when applied as preventive treatments under water limiting conditions, they minimize detrimental effects of drought stress as they enhance yield and quality parameters, improving the priming activity of existing formulations.
