for RATP Dev in Australia.

Sydney Airport Metro Contract.

Qatar World Cup presented
so many challenges.

Obviously we had COVID.

We had an environment where
people were unable to work.

And we had a very difficult
environment with regard to climate

and 47 different nationalities.

Safety climate was so important.

At the beginning during World Cup
preparations, we undertook a safety

{{00:00:55}}
climate survey, which was repeated
every year through the journey of

{{00:00:59}}
the World Cup so that we could have
a snapshot, a look in to see the

sentiment of staff and how they felt
regarding health and safety at work.

With the World Cup being in Qatar and
the very first World Cup ever being

{{00:01:21}}
undertaken in the Middle East, there
was kind of a stigmatism, which Qatar

{{00:01:25}}
worked extremely hard to overcome.

{{00:01:28}}
They had issues around fatalities in
construction, which had sometimes were

{{00:01:34}}
blown out of all proportions in the media
through to the challenges of COVID-19.

The country managed that very, very well.

{{00:01:42}}
It set up a number of review
committees, organizing committees,

{{00:01:46}}
and worked incredibly close
with all of the stakeholders.

To name a few, obviously ourselves as
the operator, the Minister of Interior,

to look at security arrangements
for the event, and all the other

{{00:01:58}}
stakeholders including the World
Cup organizers themselves for FIFA.

I think for me there's three things:
Planning - so taking the time to plan

{{00:02:16}}
the event well ahead of schedule,
making sure that people involved in

{{00:02:19}}
that process understand the plan.

Preparation - I cannot emphasize
having to prepare, prepare, prepare.

Which involves  training the
people, involving engaging the

{{00:02:30}}
stakeholders and exercising.

{{00:02:33}}
Take the opportunity to have large scale
exercises to practice, to rehearse.

And the last part is being a
learning organization - being in

{{00:02:42}}
an environment where people can
learn, can understand, can grow,

{{00:02:47}}
and can give them the opportunities.

That after the World Cup, what are
they going to do, move on to their next

opportunities because of these skills
and expertise that they have obtained.

Look, I think the biggest safety
initiatives were obviously

understanding the importance of it
being a learning journey for everyone.

Recognizing the importance of safety
critical skills in the workplace,

focusing our time and attention to
train and retrain those individuals

{{00:03:23}}
and taking time to implement a
learning journey for everybody.

The core of the success of this
event was the baseline of having a

competency management system where
everyone was engaged in this system.

Everyone had a learning journey in which
they, and a learning pathway in which

they, in which they participated in
regular activities, but a learning journey

that they can now take these opportunities
anywhere they go across the world.

Leaving a legacy for a country like
Qatar was the most important thing.

New country.

First time that an event had been
held in the Middle East, it was all

about leaving a good impression.

Creating an environment that is
safe for people and in our case,

contractors, staff and our customers.

Leaving an environment where it is secure.

So focusing on security and creating
an environment where people do

feel safe, they do feel secure, and
that they leave Qatar having, you

know, a very positive experience.

Training education was the cornerstone
of the delivery of the World Cup.

It was across every aspect of the program,
every aspect of the schedule, and every

aspect of what our staff and contractors
did, including those from third parties.

Training formed a formidable part of
the success of the event, including

police, law enforcement, government
officials through to the World

Cup organizers themselves, through
to ourselves as the operator.
