Description

Are you excited about the prospect of aging within the confines of a nursing home? Unlikely, right? This provocative question introduces the core problem our society faces as the population ages— the vast majority express a desire to stay within their current home and/or community as they age, allowing them to stay connected to their established social groups, services, and more. Research, including ongoing Blue Zones studies, has shown that aging-in-community not only benefits social connectedness but can also help to maintain a person’s mental/cognitive health and independence. Regrettably, most neighborhood developments, and the homes within them, are not designed with the integration of features that can successfully facilitate healthy, active, and connected aging. Through this session, we'll showcase the evolving needs and preferences of our aging populations, particularly the baby boomers, who are redefining what it means, and what they need, to successfully grow older. Our discussion will highlight the promise of the emerging Lifelong Communities program to guide the development of sustainable, accessible, and inclusive living environments that support healthy lives from birth through all stages of life and facilitate aging-in-community. The Lifelong Communities guidance system incorporates the best of LEED, WELL, Enterprise Green Communities and select age-friendly guidance systems from around the world. We will showcase the world’s first pre-certified “Lifelong Community” to help attendees uncover the potential and the ingredients for creating healthy, sustainable, and vital age-friendly communities. In the second half of our session, participants will dive into an interactive, collaborative flash charrette where teams will be guided to integrate “Lifelong” design and development strategies into an inclusive, accessible, and sustainable community project. This dynamic, hands-on activity is designed to spark innovative thinking and ignite discussions that empower attendees to apply Lifelong Community principles into their development projects for significant, real-world impacts.
