Jacqueline KirkmanJacqueline KirkmanLived Experience Project Officer, Mental Health Drugs and Alcohol Service at Barwon Health

Jacqueline Kirkman has a clinical background as an optometrist but in more recent years her main roles have involved conducting research into workforce maldistributions and health service improvement through optometry student placements. Her passion to improve access to healthcare for regional and rural Australians led her to complete her PhD at Deakin University. However, her life’s path was abruptly altered following the birth of her son in 2019 when she experienced severe postnatal psychosis. She has subsequently experienced a number of episodes of psychosis and had multiple inpatient public admissions both involuntary and voluntary. She feels very fortunate to have been able to receive care for an acute psychotic episode in 2022 through Barwon Health’s Mental Health Hospital in the Home service. Since these experiences, she has become passionate about mental health service reform. She has spoken publicly about her experience to raise awareness, reduce stigma and improve health services, a highlight of which was being interviewed for the podcast Pregnancy Uncut and writing an article for the ABC. Professionally, she now uses her knowledge as a service user in a project management role at a large public hospital where she is involved in the development of new mental health capital works as well as a range of other lived experience initiatives.
