I wanted to start off, what, tell us
about your vision for AI in the future.

More than a prediction
about what will happen.

It's more of a prescription about
what I think should happen, which is

fundamentally we are still in control and
in the driving seat and we need to ensure

that the AI age is the human AI age.

And with that, I think there's three
fundamental things we need to work out.

One, how we can ensure that the
productivity gains that we obtain

{{00:00:51}}
from AI result in us transitioning
to more creative and intellectually

{{00:00:56}}
fulfilling tasks and jobs so that
humans remain in the loop and fulfilled.

Secondly incremental improvements
from things that aren't working

{{00:01:05}}
very well today in terms of
accuracy, bias, and efficiency.

{{00:01:09}}
And third, I think, the
creation and deployment of good

{{00:01:12}}
ethical standards and charters.

So that we minimize the frequency of
malignant or malicious activity around AI.

If the three things happen, they will
enhance each other and we can think of a

{{00:01:26}}
future that is better than the present.

So this AI prescription in the future,
where do humans fit in this future?

Humans play a big role designing
ethical AI, being in the loop at the

{{00:01:39}}
level of conception and inception.

{{00:01:41}}
For example, ensuring that you can
decontaminate training data sets

{{00:01:46}}
from biases so that we don't just
replicate or augment human biases, but

{{00:01:50}}
we actually optimize algorithms for
something that is better than the past.

{{00:01:55}}
Secondly, they play a role revaluing
the interactions with other people.

{{00:02:03}}
In an age where most of our tasks, jobs
and interactions will be heavily dependent

{{00:02:08}}
on technology, we're going to crave
human and humane contact and validation.

So it's very important that with
that we we reclaim the skills and the

{{00:02:21}}
qualities that AI is unlikely to master.

Things like empathy, emotional
intelligence, self awareness,

{{00:02:27}}
kindness, consideration.

I think the more we depend on AI
and technology, the more we need

{{00:02:34}}
to work to humanize the world.

So in the creative fields, a lot of
creative industries, we're already

{{00:02:40}}
seeing content being openAI and different
tools being used to create content.

How can we best adapt as
creators in this new environment?

So I think it's important to acknowledge
that technology has always been

{{00:02:55}}
used to make things more  efficient.

{{00:03:00}}
The mind is a powerful thinking
machine, but the brain is a very lazy

{{00:03:03}}
organ, and it's not for thinking.

{{00:03:05}}
We want to make things as
predictable and easy as possible.

{{00:03:08}}
Even in the creative fields of
domains, let's take movie production,

{{00:03:12}}
music, poetry, literature,
non-fiction, science, even generation.

{{00:03:19}}
If there are patterns that make
something predictable enough that

{{00:03:22}}
machines can do it, it's a little bit
like a cat and mouse chase or race.

{{00:03:26}}
Whereby as soon as there's something
that machines can do, it will push

{{00:03:31}}
us to actually invent something new.

{{00:03:33}}
To give you a very blunt example,
Spotify could probably automate 90%

{{00:03:38}}
of its artists because it has so
much data on the music production

{{00:03:42}}
that people like it could do it, but
that wouldn't kill human musicians.

{{00:03:46}}
It would simply push the boundaries
of creativity and imagination

{{00:03:50}}
and music to the next level.

{{00:03:52}}
That makes a lot of sense.

{{00:03:53}}
That ties into the next question I was
going to ask you is, besides music and

{{00:03:58}}
arts things, what are unique to humans
that AI will never really be great at?

{{00:04:05}}
I think consciousness, understanding,
even when AI can replicate some of

{{00:04:12}}
the outputs that usually requires
or needs some understanding,

{{00:04:18}}
fundamentally doesn't understand things.

{{00:04:20}}
The, description of generative
AI as a stochastic parrot or a

{{00:04:24}}
calculator for words is accurate.

{{00:04:27}}
And so actually to the degree that
there is still value in fundamentally

{{00:04:31}}
understanding things, including
ourselves, those will be the

{{00:04:35}}
things that, and then you get to
consciousness, which for a while has been

{{00:04:39}}
questioned as, and what is the point?

{{00:04:41}}
Maybe the point of it is actually.

{{00:04:43}}
To get us to a deeper level of
understanding than what AI can generate.

{{00:04:47}}
Look, in the near future, AI can give
me a perfect description of your friends

{{00:04:52}}
and your spouse and your parents.

{{00:04:55}}
But you would still understand
them in a way that AI can't.

{{00:04:58}}
And the same applies to AI's ability to
describe or make sense of anything else.

What is something that we can do as humans
to prevent to protect our individuality?

{{00:05:11}}
It's a really good
question, and I think...

{{00:05:15}}
first, I think it's important that
we harness it before we protect it.

{{00:05:19}}
That we actually understand what it
means, how we differ from others, and

{{00:05:23}}
what aspects of that are good or bad.

{{00:05:26}}
Secondly, I think we need to be aware
of the fact that whenever we automate

{{00:05:32}}
or outsource aspects of our life because
it's more efficient, that there's more

{{00:05:37}}
to living as a human or being a thinking
and feeling a creature sensing human.

{{00:05:43}}
To that efficiency, right?

{{00:05:45}}
Efficiency, by definition, is the enemy of
deep exploration and deep understanding.

{{00:05:50}}
Something is quick and easy
and cheap when, by definition,

{{00:05:54}}
you're not really fully immersing
yourself in what the problem is.

{{00:05:58}}
And then I think, finally, it's important
that we really put this technology

{{00:06:03}}
to the best possible use that we can.

And I think that might transcend
things like understanding or protecting

{{00:06:09}}
our individuality and actually
work more at the collective level.

How can we make systems, groups, teams,
organization function better and achieve

{{00:06:18}}
things better together through the help of
data and the help of AI as a co pilot that

{{00:06:23}}
translates that data into recommendations.

So in closing, what is the one
thing you want people to take

away from this conversation?

That it's important to have or try
to have a nuanced perspective on

AI and that nobody has the answer.

We're still hitting a moving target.

But the right balance, I think, to
approach this topic is a combination of

humble exploration and an experimental
mindset with also a focus on the

problems that we're trying to solve.

Because if this becomes just or is treated
like another fad or like another overhyped

phenomenon people will be disappointed and
will actually miss out on the opportunity,

which is to improve many things in life.

That makes a lot of sense.
