Emma Gierschick OAMEmma Gierschick OAMChildren’s Advocate

Emma Gierschick OAM has been a life-long advocate for vulnerable children. She has a case management background caring for children in multiple residential settings inc emergency accommodation, residential schools, youth work & out of home care. She has been a mum or step mum to 6 children, 3 of whom have a disability. A survivor of extreme family violence, Emma spent a decade lobbying Parliaments to get greater recognition for children with a disability facing violence, the effect of trauma & the need for recovery support. She simultaneously fought breast cancer & successfully navigated 10 yrs of personal litigation, ultimately being granted a 40yr IVO Intervention Order. In 2021, Emma’s work was recognised with an OAM being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.

Commissioner Dan StubsCommissioner Dan StubsVictorian Disability Worker Commission

Dan Stubbs is the Victorian Disability Worker Commissioner and is the head of the Commission. He was appointed in October 2019.

As Commissioner, Dan is responsible for regulating the conduct of all Victorian disability workers. He responds to complaints about all disability workers and has the power to ban unregistered workers from the sector for breaching the Code of Conduct.

Dan has a disability; he has a sight impairment. He has an understanding of the reliance people have on disability workers and the need to ensure services are safe and high quality.

Dan is passionate about the rights and entitlements of people with disability. Previously he worked in the community legal sector as a lawyer and in various leadership roles. He has also worked extensively in developing countries where he lead work on disability. Dan also has a long history of leadership in Australian systemic advocacy organisations of people with disability.

Dan Stubbs has a Bachelor of Laws (hons) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons), and Graduate Diplomas in Development Economics and Legal Practice.

Dan is committed to advancing the rights and safety of people with disabilities. He is also more fun and interesting than this bio suggests…

Belinda KochanowskaBelinda KochanowskaPrincipal Solicitor at Intrepidus Law

Belinda Kochanowska is the Founder and Principal Solicitor of Intrepidus Law which is a NDIS Law and disability rights legal practice. Belinda is passionate about NDIS Appeals at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and achieving “reasonable and necessary” disability supports for her clients, which are often life changing. Belinda is also Autistic and the mother of a NDIS Participant which combined with her disability rights legal practice provides Belinda with unique insights and understanding of the lived experience of all aspects of the NDIS, disability human rights, lived experience of disability and disability supports. Of particular interest is the inclusion and support of neurodivergent children in mainstream schooling in Australia.

Belinda completed her Law degree at the University of Queensland, and she was admitted to the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2003. Belinda’s 20-year legal career ranges from being a solicitor in top tier private practice, a government lawyer (both State and Commonwealth), corporate in-house lawyer and an advocate at a not-for-profit disability human rights organisation.
