Key takeaways

The main rail safety issues in Australia are interoperability, skill shortage, and competency training and assessment.

A safety management system is a product of the risk management approach and should capture all identified ways of managing safety risks.

Gaps in current systems include insufficient understanding of new technologies and a lack of constant review of control measures.
