So hydrogen,  it is one of

the most abundant elements

{{00:00:25}}
in the universe, but it

{{00:00:27}}
tends to exist,  connected

{{00:00:29}}
to other elements and

{{00:00:31}}
the most common one.

Would be water.

{{00:00:34}}
Water is H2O.

{{00:00:36}}
It's chemical formula,

{{00:00:37}}
so that means that there

{{00:00:38}}
are hydrogen and oxygen,

{{00:00:40}}
contained in water.

If we want to utilize

{{00:00:43}}
hydrogen, we will need to

{{00:00:44}}
break that chemical bond.

The why we are looking

{{00:00:47}}
at hydrogen as part

{{00:00:49}}
of energy transition

{{00:00:50}}
technologies is that it is

{{00:00:52}}
an excellent energy carrier.

{{00:00:55}}
You can combust hydrogen

{{00:00:57}}
very much in the way that

{{00:00:58}}
you can combust natural gas.

{{00:01:00}}
And in that chemical

{{00:01:02}}
process you, when you create

{{00:01:06}}
water from hydrogen and

{{00:01:08}}
oxygen together, , there

{{00:01:10}}
is energy released.

{{00:01:11}}
So that is another way

{{00:01:13}}
in which hydrogen can

{{00:01:14}}
be utilized,  to produce

{{00:01:17}}
energy both in the

{{00:01:18}}
combustion and both in

{{00:01:19}}
that chemical reaction.

And if in the process of

{{00:01:22}}
obtaining that hydrogen, we

{{00:01:24}}
do it in a way that does not

{{00:01:25}}
rely on fossil fuels,  it

{{00:01:28}}
does not rely on a production

{{00:01:30}}
method that emits carbon,

{{00:01:32}}
then we have, a very good,

{{00:01:36}}
energy source and energy

{{00:01:37}}
carrier for us to help

{{00:01:39}}
with decarbonization.

{{00:01:42}}
hydrogen is actually

{{00:01:42}}
already utilized, for

{{00:01:44}}
example, in fertilizers,

{{00:01:46}}
but that, , the majority of

{{00:01:48}}
hydrogen at the moment is

{{00:01:50}}
produced using fossil fuel

{{00:01:51}}
based methods, for example,

{{00:01:53}}
through coal gasification.

{{00:01:55}}
Or with SMR, steam

{{00:01:57}}
methane reforming and the

{{00:01:58}}
carbon is not captured

{{00:02:00}}
as part of that process.

So you can utilize those

{{00:02:03}}
production methods and

{{00:02:04}}
capture the carbon and

{{00:02:06}}
therefore produce hydrogen

{{00:02:08}}
in a, a low carbon, low

{{00:02:10}}
emission production method.

{{00:02:12}}
Or we can utilize

{{00:02:13}}
electrolysis,  to

{{00:02:16}}
break the bonds of.

{{00:02:18}}
In water, for example, to

{{00:02:19}}
separate out the hydrogen

{{00:02:21}}
and the oxygen and capture

{{00:02:23}}
hydrogen in that way.

{{00:02:24}}
So electrolysis, when

{{00:02:27}}
that is produced using,

{{00:02:31}}
renewable electricity,

{{00:02:33}}
forms such as with solar or

{{00:02:35}}
for, solar PV or with wind.

{{00:02:38}}
That's when we start

{{00:02:39}}
talking about renewable,

{{00:02:41}}
based, hydrogen production.

{{00:02:43}}
And so these are the kinds

{{00:02:44}}
of, production methods that

{{00:02:46}}
we're exploring to be able

{{00:02:48}}
to, obtain that hydrogen in

{{00:02:51}}
a way, that is in a, a lower

{{00:02:54}}
emission or zero emission

{{00:02:56}}
production method, and thus

{{00:02:57}}
help with decarbonization.

{{00:02:59}}
Even though it is an excellent

{{00:03:01}}
energy carrier as a gas,

{{00:03:04}}
it will fill whatever size

{{00:03:07}}
container that you have.

{{00:03:08}}
It's not very dense, so

{{00:03:11}}
volumetric density is not

{{00:03:14}}
great in its gas geier form.

{{00:03:16}}
What we can do to pack more

{{00:03:19}}
hydrogen into any given

{{00:03:20}}
volume is to compress it.

{{00:03:23}}
So you have, you,

{{00:03:25}}
you compress it down.

{{00:03:26}}
You have more in a given

{{00:03:27}}
volume, very similar to the

{{00:03:28}}
way that we have, liquefying

{{00:03:30}}
natural gas, for example

{{00:03:32}}
all we can call it further,

{{00:03:35}}
that's called liquifaction.

And we call it down to

{{00:03:38}}
actually pretty cold

{{00:03:39}}
temperatures -5 | 253

degrees  centigrade.

And then,  that's also a

{{00:03:45}}
very kind of efficient way

of transporting hygiene.

{{00:03:47}}
You now have quite a

{{00:03:48}}
bit of hygiene within

{{00:03:49}}
that given space.

{{00:03:50}}
There's a lot of work

{{00:03:51}}
being done through storage

{{00:03:53}}
materials in that compression.

{{00:03:56}}
how much more can

{{00:03:57}}
we pack into there?

{{00:03:58}}
And, and that requires

{{00:03:59}}
really strong materials

{{00:04:00}}
that aren't gonna bend.

{{00:04:02}}
That's that part.

There is the challenge

{{00:04:05}}
of being able to extract

{{00:04:06}}
hydrogen,  in that low carbon

{{00:04:09}}
production method in

{{00:04:10}}
a way that's gonna

{{00:04:11}}
be cost effective.

Our,  the prices that we

{{00:04:16}}
are currently looking at,

{{00:04:17}}
the point of production

{{00:04:18}}
for hydrogen,  they are

{{00:04:20}}
for renewable hydrogen.

At least.

{{00:04:21}}
They are higher than we

{{00:04:23}}
would like them to be in

{{00:04:24}}
order for them to be, in

{{00:04:27}}
a way that is attractive

{{00:04:28}}
to replace fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels are still

{{00:04:32}}
far less expensive to

{{00:04:34}}
produce,  which makes

{{00:04:36}}
it more challenging.

To transition over to, to

utilizing it as a fuel.

Some of the,  kind of

{{00:04:43}}
clear applications that

{{00:04:45}}
are emerging are,  hydrogen

{{00:04:50}}
in,  heavy haulage,  long

{{00:04:52}}
distance,  logistic

{{00:04:54}}
vehicles, for example.

Some of the advantages there

{{00:04:58}}
are utilizing the fact that.

{{00:05:01}}
Hydrogen is very light.

{{00:05:03}}
If we were to go with,

{{00:05:04}}
battery electric as the

{{00:05:06}}
decarbonized, transport mode,

{{00:05:09}}
you need quite heavy batteries

{{00:05:11}}
for, to provide the power

{{00:05:12}}
and the range for the trucks.

{{00:05:13}}
So there's that,

{{00:05:16}}
advantage there that we

{{00:05:16}}
see for, for hydrogen,

{{00:05:19}}
in that application.

{{00:05:20}}
So they're probably two

{{00:05:21}}
examples that I give

{{00:05:23}}
but certainly in, in

{{00:05:24}}
the heavier transport.

{{00:05:26}}
Decarbonization, that's

{{00:05:29}}
where we may see,  hydrogen

{{00:05:31}}
derivatives coming through.

{{00:05:32}}
For example, in, , marine

{{00:05:35}}
shipping,  to replace,

{{00:05:38}}
current,  fuels current

{{00:05:40}}
bunkering fuels.

{{00:05:41}}
And also in, in trains

{{00:05:45}}
as well which is diesels.

So as a replacement for

{{00:05:48}}
diesel,  but also exploring

{{00:05:50}}
hydrogen as part of,

{{00:05:52}}
sustainable aviation fuels.
