Building Beyond Code: Exploring High-Performance Residential Wall Assemblies


Nick is a Red Seal journeyman carpenter with over 15 years of experience in many different aspects of home building. He started and has been operating a small family-run home-building company since 2014 as well as currently working at SAIT with the Green Building Technologies as a project coordinator. Nick is a certified Passive house tradesperson, Passive house trades course instructor, and is a big proponent of encouraging industry professionals to get educated on high performance building practices.

Ben earned his Architectural Technologies diploma from SAIT in 2013 and has since cultivated a dynamic career focused on building science and sustainable construction practices. As a building envelope consultant, Ben specializes in diagnosing and overseeing the repair of building envelope issues in both single and multi-family structures. He has also consulted on diverse multi-family and commercial construction projects in Calgary and Fort McMurray.
Driven by a passion for advancing sustainable building practices, Ben currently spearheads building science-focused research at the Green Building Technologies Access Centre, part of SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services Hub. He actively contributes to curriculum development aimed at promoting the widespread integration of green, high-performance building design, construction, and retrofitting principles.
