perspective is a lot more

choice and opportunity.

There's a lot we still

need to do, but the Royal

Commission certainly took us

{{00:00:44}}
further ahead in our thinking.

So there's been a range of

{{00:00:47}}
fantastic,  initiatives and

{{00:00:49}}
programs that have started

{{00:00:51}}
post the Royal Commission

{{00:00:52}}
and the implementation

{{00:00:53}}
of recommendations.

{{00:00:55}}
Obviously, the creation

{{00:00:56}}
of the National Dementia

{{00:00:57}}
Action Plan, which is still

{{00:00:58}}
underway, is a great launch

{{00:01:00}}
pad for some of these, but

{{00:01:02}}
we've also seen increased

{{00:01:03}}
funding in areas such as

{{00:01:04}}
respite and respite planning.

{{00:01:06}}
More access to respite.

{{00:01:08}}
We know that carers need to

{{00:01:10}}
access respite early and often

{{00:01:12}}
to enable them to stay at

{{00:01:13}}
home longer and support the

{{00:01:15}}
person they provide care for.

{{00:01:16}}
So that's a

{{00:01:17}}
fantastic initiative.

{{00:01:19}}
Increased funding in the areas

{{00:01:20}}
of training and the national

{{00:01:21}}
dementia training standards,

{{00:01:23}}
as well as increased funding

{{00:01:24}}
for behavior support.

{{00:01:26}}
People with dementia when

{{00:01:27}}
they receive their diagnosis,

{{00:01:29}}
should have the ability to

{{00:01:30}}
plan how they're going to live

{{00:01:33}}
and live well with dementia.

{{00:01:35}}
And so that's by providing

{{00:01:36}}
them access to allied

{{00:01:38}}
health services, exercise

{{00:01:40}}
physiologists, a range of

{{00:01:42}}
allied health services that

{{00:01:43}}
build not only on existing

{{00:01:46}}
strengths, but build new ones.

{{00:01:48}}
So great examples include

{{00:01:51}}
re-engagement with

{{00:01:52}}
purposeful and meaningful

{{00:01:54}}
social activities, going

{{00:01:57}}
to the gym, taking control.

{{00:01:59}}
Because a diagnosis

{{00:02:01}}
of dementia doesn't

{{00:02:02}}
mean your life stops.

{{00:02:03}}
And there are great services

{{00:02:04}}
and programs that can support.

{{00:02:07}}
Reablement is all about,

{{00:02:09}}
embracing the opportunity to

{{00:02:11}}
continue to be a social and

{{00:02:13}}
active participant in society.

{{00:02:16}}
So within an increased focus

{{00:02:18}}
on choice and maintaining

{{00:02:20}}
dignity for people living with

{{00:02:22}}
dementia and residential care,

{{00:02:23}}
we've seen age care providers.

{{00:02:25}}
Really flip their thinking.

{{00:02:26}}
And this includes things

{{00:02:27}}
such as, enhancing the

{{00:02:30}}
ability for the residents

{{00:02:32}}
to be engaged in activity

{{00:02:34}}
activities that are meaningful

{{00:02:36}}
and purposeful to them.

{{00:02:37}}
So that includes an increased

{{00:02:39}}
focus on nutrition and

{{00:02:40}}
the food that they eat.

{{00:02:43}}
Engagement with activities

{{00:02:46}}
outside of the aged care

{{00:02:47}}
setting, but also the further

{{00:02:49}}
introduction and enablement

{{00:02:51}}
of intergenerational

{{00:02:52}}
programs in aged care.

{{00:02:54}}
So we're seeing some really

{{00:02:55}}
great examples of bringing

{{00:02:57}}
young people together

{{00:02:59}}
with people who are living

{{00:02:59}}
in aged care settings.

{{00:03:01}}
There's no doubt that working

{{00:03:03}}
in aged care is challenging.

{{00:03:05}}
There's a lot of regulation

{{00:03:07}}
and there's a lot of process

{{00:03:09}}
behind providing that care.

{{00:03:11}}
But our aged care workforce

{{00:03:12}}
go to work every day to

{{00:03:14}}
support our most vulnerable

{{00:03:15}}
members of society.

{{00:03:17}}
What they do to maintain

{{00:03:18}}
and support that, needs

{{00:03:20}}
to be strengthened by

{{00:03:21}}
increased training, but

{{00:03:23}}
training that is based

{{00:03:24}}
around mentoring and coaching

{{00:03:26}}
on the ground, so taking

{{00:03:28}}
evidence-based best prac

{{00:03:30}}
practice, but also what's good

{{00:03:32}}
for the person with dementia.

{{00:03:33}}
So putting yourselves

{{00:03:34}}
in their shoes.

{{00:03:35}}
I think there's a lot more

{{00:03:36}}
work to do in the reablement

{{00:03:38}}
space in aged care, but if we

{{00:03:40}}
look at everyone who's living

{{00:03:41}}
there as an individual with

{{00:03:42}}
their own story and their

{{00:03:44}}
own ability to participate

{{00:03:46}}
in their experience in

{{00:03:47}}
aged care, we're gonna

{{00:03:48}}
see much better outcomes.

{{00:03:50}}
We need to maintain our focus

{{00:03:52}}
on workforce issues, how we

{{00:03:54}}
attract and retain workforce.

{{00:03:56}}
That support people living

{{00:03:57}}
with dementia to live well

{{00:04:00}}
and bring the workforce

{{00:04:01}}
together in true partnership,

{{00:04:03}}
in true relationship based.

{{00:04:05}}
Relationship centered

{{00:04:06}}
care with the person with

{{00:04:08}}
dementia, their family

{{00:04:09}}
carers, their friend

{{00:04:11}}
carers, their care network,

{{00:04:12}}
and the care provider.

{{00:04:14}}
All working together with the

{{00:04:16}}
person living with dementia

{{00:04:18}}
at the center of that story.
