Description

The design of Turner Construction’s NYC HQ was a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary effort that embodies Turner’s corporate priorities of Equity, Inclusion, and Workforce Development; and their ‘active caring’ culture of inclusion, sustainability, and wellness. Believing that inclusive design begins with an inclusive process, Turner brought on two architects – global architecture and design firm, Gensler; and MWBE firm, Studio 397 Architecture – alongside Legacy Engineers, to co-create and realize a new best-in-class HQ in an equity-driven, holistic way. Certified LEED Platinum; and pending WELL Platinum and Living Building Challenge Core Certifications, Turner HQ’s design process was underscored by ambitious sustainability and ESG goals, prioritizing performance-based decisions with a goal of helping to redefine what a ‘healthy workplace’ is defined by. Highlights include: - Completed in Jan 2023, the 86,000 RSF project – which achieved over 60% MWBE diverse subcontracting participation – was made possible through teams working together in a quasi design-build approach: surveying staff and creating an internal task group with representatives from each office - The project team established embodied carbon reduction goals early in the project, focusing on carpet, ceiling tile, insulation, and wallboard as key opportunities. - Throughout design, the team researched strategies to reduce carbon while preserving the aesthetic and functional requirements of the space - All the finishes, materials and furniture meet the highest sustainability criteria including low emitting materials, high-recycled content as well as Declare Label and Red-list free selections. - In order to integrate biophilia authentically, a biophilic design workshop was carried out with all design team members in order to incorporate meaningful biophilic elements into the project.
