I think women have not only a responsibility,
but a great opportunity to help other women.

I would say this includes helping people in different
industries, different skills or professional development.

it's also to help mentor other women.

So I recently was a mentor for female founders in FinTech,
and I had a wonderful mentee who you brought forward a

wealth of amazing experience and expertise in her work,
yet she was new to pitching and I was able to help her

refine her messaging and to pitch and win her competition.

I'm sure you've probably had a mentor yourself -  could you maybe
share a brief anecdote about an impactful moment within your career?

So I've actually had several mentors and I believe in
Debra Walton, set up looking at mentors and that's really

to think about mentors having one for a mentor for a
reason, a mentor for a season and a mentor for life.

And I've had that experience where I've had a mentor who
can help me for reasons, such as being a new leader in a

new group or a mentor for a season when I was at a company
and I needed someone to help me grow and develop my career

at that company and they understood that company dynamic.

Yeah.

And then a mentor for life, someone who's just evolved with
me personally, professionally and mentored me throughout.

So how did you sort of find these mentors?

Was it something, you know, through networking or more organic?

It's more organic for me, I think you have to have that personal
connection and it is one having women or men, because I've

had a lot of men mentors as well, who are open to sharing
and dialoguing with you on what you're trying to accomplish.

And so it is having that spark of connection and beginning
of the conversation, and then looking and say, I really

respect you and how you've done X and I'm struggling with
Y and that's how it starts often and building it together.

Great advice, I think that will benefit
a lot of people looking to find mentors.

So what are some of the strategies that you might
be able to offer women who want to achieve a

more prominent role within their organizations?

I would think first, I would ask women to not think of
themselves as a women in marketing or a female in technology.

But think about all of the skills and expertise you
bring as an individual and as a leader and focus on

those and bring those forward in their conversations.

How do you foster creative and innovative
thinking within your organizations?

What are some of the ways that the ideas are shared and implement?

At Fidelity, we really look to innovate
across the company and at all levels.

So we have a variety of different ways for people to do
so, whether it is having a crowdsourcing opportunity for

online sharing of opportunities and so associates who are
working directly with a customer might have an idea on

{{00:03:32}}
how we can innovate and serve that customer better and
they can crowdsource that idea up throughout the company.

Another opportunity is one that I am personally very excited
about where we started an innovation challenge, in our

regional centers and we were able to bring people together from
different business units to work on a major business problem

so that they could all be a part of this innovative process.

Learn new skills and work on something that would
help the business overall and then we have specific.

So there's my group fidelity labs looks to incubate new businesses.

We also have our F cat team, which is also has researchers and
we partner very closely with a variety of different universities

and organizations to bring forward the thoughts and trends that
are happening today and in the future for us to be aware of.

What do you think that the industry
will look like in 10 years from now?

So I think the industry is evolving because we are always
looking to see how we can best meet our customer's needs.

That really  started changing when we had the internet developed
and then we went to the internet of things and the internet of me.

How can we create this more customized, personal experience?

And in the future, I think that will continue to evolve and
it'll evolve to the degree where we won't have to go through

massive amounts of data and try to find like scenarios predict,
but we'll be able to know exactly what an individual needs

and serve the variety of solutions for that individual person.

And just to finish off - do you do anything in
your daily life to ensure that your growth and

development are still continuing as a leader?

I think it's really important every day to be open, to have your
eyes open your ears, listening because leadership principles,

new thoughts come in, places that you would not expect.

For example, my daughter in first grade recently brought
forward a really great corporate principle of asking and

focusing on the why, not just the what that had happened.

Her emphasis on understanding the why behind things is something
that we do at work quite a bit and we, we have to remind ourselves

{{00:05:53}}
to focus on that and to learn from our successes or learn when
things don't go the way we want it to go and understand the why.

So can you tell me, what do you love about
coming to the Boston innovation festival?

I like the Boston innovation festival because
it brings together a variety of people.

across industries, it's not industry specific across functions.

So it's great to see that there was a project management
track and my colleague was presenting in that.

And I thought that was wonderful to be able to bring forward
variety of practices and examples and companies large and small,

and bring forward that diversity of conversation and thought

Sterling gives her view on the importance of women in leadership roles and how they can help mentor and development. She explains her experience with mentors in her past and how they have assisted her for a reason, season, and for life.
